Local SEO case study of fence contractor ranking number one on Google Maps

The Challenge

JJ’s Fence Company was a well-run, family-owned fence contractor doing quality work across San Diego. But almost all of their business came from word-of-mouth referrals and paid leads. Their website was outdated and didn’t convert. Their Google Maps visibility was inconsistent. They had no system for capturing leads or following up.

They were good at what they did. Google and potential customers just couldn’t see it yet. They came to us with a simple goal: build a digital foundation that could support real growth.

What We Did

We treated JJ’s as a long-term growth project, not a quick SEO fix. That meant rebuilding the brand from scratch and connecting every piece to revenue.

Website rebuild. We rebuilt the site from the ground up with clear messaging around services and service areas, strong trust signals and photos, and a conversion-focused layout designed to drive calls and quote requests. The website became a sales tool instead of a digital brochure.

Local SEO and Google Maps. We fully optimized their Google Business Profile, aligned it with the website, and built location-specific service pages. Instead of chasing generic blog content, we focused on local trust and relevance, the signals that actually move Map Pack rankings.

Review automation. We set up a system that consistently requests reviews from happy customers, responds to them automatically, and posts to social media. Reviews doubled in under six months, and their average rating climbed from 4.2 to 4.8. That improved rankings and conversion at the same time.

“We didn’t just get more reviews. We got a system that responds for us, posts on our social media, and keeps our phones ringing.”

Lead capture and follow-up. Every lead from forms and calls flows into their CRM and gets a fast response. Visibility only matters if it turns into booked jobs.

The Zone 0 campaign. Once the foundation was working, we went after an opportunity nobody else in their market was covering. California’s Zone 0 defensible-space laws (AB 3074 and SB 504) require non-combustible fencing within 5 feet of homes in fire hazard zones, with compliance deadlines of January 1, 2027 for Very High zones and January 1, 2028 for High zones. Thousands of San Diego homes have wood fences that no longer meet code, and homeowners were searching for answers no local company was providing.

So we built the answer. We created a Zone 0 Checker tool that lets homeowners enter their address and instantly see their fire hazard zone and compliance deadline, pulling from official city, Poway, and CAL FIRE data. Quote requests from the tool land in JJ’s CRM with the zone result and property details already attached. Around it, we built a dedicated fire-resistant fence service page and an eight-post content cluster answering the specific questions homeowners are asking: costs, qualifying materials, deadlines, insurance. Every piece links back to the tool and the service page, building topical authority on a subject with a hard legal deadline and rising search demand.

The Results

Within one year of launching the new website and local SEO strategy:

  • $1M+ in annual revenue
  • #1 and #2 rankings in the Google Map Pack across their core San Diego markets
  • Reviews doubled in under 6 months, with the average rating rising from 4.2 to 4.8
  • Consistent inbound calls from organic search and reduced reliance on paid ads

The bigger win is that the system compounds. Rankings and leads don’t disappear when ads pause or referrals slow down. And with the Zone 0 campaign, JJ’s is first to market on a topic every fire-zone homeowner in San Diego will be searching before the 2027 deadline.
